Potential fabrication in research images threatens key theory of Alzheimer’s disease A neuroscience sleuth challenges data showing one toxic form of amyloid protein is a cause of brain condition

The Alzheimer’s research went well beyond p-hacking. Image manipulation, unblinding researchers, removing unwanted data, etc. www.science.org/content/arti... & www.science.org/content/arti...

Really seems like he’s saying “you didn’t listen to the easy way, when we could have pretended all this racialized authoritarianism was part of organic liberalism, so instead we have to do this the hard way”

I wonder how it would have been framed if Joe Biden had been in a delusional fantasy world about key aspects of the job.

This behavior by the New York Times is neither novel nor innocent. For a decade, they have effectively granted blanket anonymity to Trump personnel, often Trump himself, who have used this grant to lie with impunity. The Times even helps them by obfuscating their origin entirely.

“We can do this the easy way or the hard way, you didn’t take the easy way” - apparently centrists on Trumpiam nowadays.

And pretending there was a “compassionate” answer was not actually a good response to bad science.

Someone recommended me his education book bc I had been ranting about racists who pretended their evidence was scientific. And I was like ummmm…….and they were like really I thought you’d like it. And I felt very bad that I had done a terrible job at underlying that it wasn’t scientific

Congress specifically passed a law giving the Secretary of Education the authority to waive student loans in a time of national emergency, but somehow Biden using that is the same as Trump's lawless authoritarianism.

You will know people by the boots they choose to lick.

Our coffee grinder is no more. We had a basic one but the internet is trying to tell me that burr grinders and coffee grinders in general are the most important part of flavorful coffee. Seems to be big bucks for a coffee grinder… so wondering if anyone has opinions on grinders?

Yeah I’m not sure how specific the targeting is for ads. It could really just be that your searches are in Spanish. Asawin implies it’s something in your searches that are causing those odd targeted ads but it really can be as minor as which language are you searching in.

It’s his fault that his first language is Spanish? Seems like it would get tiring if the Trump admin was targeting Spanish speakers to tattle. But I don’t think the blame is on people whose first language is Spanish 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Just wondered what led to questioning the pitch. I have a grudge against Haidt from decades ago but he has such a ‘reasonable centrist’ persona I feel it catches people by surprise when I’m like “that guy sucks”. And he’s been more prevalent lately with books and childcare advice and what not.

“Teach the controversy” from the discovery institute really seems to be the strategy. What’s also interesting is that some of the same players like Dawkins and Krauss who commented on teaching the science of evolution have now moved rightward into the ‘actually just teach the controversy’ territory

At least for those that have gained power in academic institutions. Maybe all the corporatization of academia makes people who are willing to make those certain capitulations rise to the top.

Academics seem oddly worried about being labeled as a partisan. That somehow a politician deciding they have an opinion on their field of expertise now means they have to walk on eggshells bc now their subject is politicized.

Columbia Agrees to $200 Million Fine to Settle Fight With Trump

Can someone smarter than the New York Times explain to me what exactly the $200M fine that Columbia is paying is *for*?

Because in my naiveté and with $400M in grant funding canceled, this is indistinguishable from a protection racket.

there's an actual genre of analysis that acknowledges that for generations people used to buy and sell other humans, aided by a comprehensive system of apartheid that continued for generations later, but nevertheless blames the resurgence of open bigotry on a decade or so of cringe Tumblr posts

So a lot of the childcare had fallen on him since his mom had to use the car to drive to work. So he was a bit sour. They touch on it briefly in the podcast but dismiss it with well there were cars in the 60s but most people only had one car and there were almost 5x less cars on the road then

I talked to a 16 yo who had recently moved from Rwanda about how he liked the US, he talked about how the cars made it so much more dangerous, requiring more supervision for his younger siblings. He said they’d all just go play in an open field but theres no communal space here they can walk

ustice demands courage. For the first time, the Department of Justice is reaching out to Ghislaine Maxwell to ask: what do you know? At
@AGPamBondi
’s direction, I’ve contacted her counsel. I intend to meet with her soon. No one is above the law—and no lead is off-limits.

Statement from
@DAGToddBlanche
:

This Department of Justice does not shy away from uncomfortable truths, nor from the responsibility to pursue justice wherever the facts may lead. The joint statement by the DOJ and FBI of July 6 remains as accurate today as it was when it was written. Namely, that in the recent thorough review of the files maintained by the FBI in the Epstein case, no evidence was uncovered that could predicate an investigation against uncharged third parties.

President Trump has told us to release all credible evidence. If Ghislane Maxwell has information about anyone who has committed crimes against victims, the FBI and the DOJ will hear what she has to say.

Therefore, at the direction of Attorney General Bondi, I have communicated with counsel for Ms. Maxwell to determine whether she would be willing to speak with prosecutors from the Department. I anticipate meeting with Ms. Maxwell in the coming days. Until now, no administration on behalf of the Department had inquired about her willingness to meet with the government. That changes now.

This may be the most corrupt thing that Bondi/Blanche have ever done.

Tolerance of a broad range of ideas is important, it’s so important for universities to have these broad discussions and include people like me! Footnote *Does not apply to students who disagree with me, the whole problem with universities nowadays is students who express disagreement.
