I’m Arun Das, I’m a PhD student in Schatz Lab @ JHU, and my work broadly focuses on algorithms to improve accessibility and representation in genomics.

I think it is time for the field of genomics to seriously reckon with the idea that our work is NOT apolitical and that bad actors can and will use our work to promote their own agendas. Appearing on Joe Rogan's podcast is a huge red flag and I am dreading where this is going.

Open Source Genetic Database Shuts Down to Protect Users From 'Authoritarian Governments' "The risk/benefit calculus of providing free & open access to individual genetic data in 2025 is very different compared to 14 years ago."

The open-source genetic database OpenSNP is shutting down and deleting all user data after 14 years due to the risk posed by Trump administration, law enforcement abuse, authoritarian governments, and 23andMe bankruptcy:

This is something I want to whack some folks right on the head with. They talk big about assigned sex and ~genetics~, and they have ZERO IDEA how many cis-identified folks are walking around with chromosomes that say otherwise.

2024 note pt. 2: As I said before, chromosomes do not determine sex do not determine gender. You cannot know whether a sample or a patient is male or female based on karyotype alone and calling a chromosome "male" is nonsense. You may be well-intentioned, but this perpetuates transphobia. 12/16

Thinking of trans scientists, patients, and people in general today, on Trans Day of Visibility. It is hard and dangerous to be visibly trans these days, and cis genomics scientists owe it to our colleagues and friends to do right by trans people and honestly reflect their experiences in our work. 🏳️‍⚧️

This is DEFCON-1. If they do this to someone who wrote an op-ed in a college newspaper, they will do this to anyone they don't like.

What this administration is teaching Universities is that even if you comply - punish students for protests, ban masks, remove DEI from websites and classes - they will still defund you and try to break you apart. Basically, there is no point in complying.
