I just got hit with an unexpected (very small) tax bill due to savings gaining interest. My 2nd thought (after 'FFS' admittedly) was at least I was lucky enough to have savings that earned enough interest to be taxed on.

Add on this morning's news about cutting heat pump, solar and insulation grants and it's Labour doing David Cameron's "cutting the green crap". If they're serious about people's energy bills, why not address the situation where bills are linked to the wholesale gas price no matter how it's made?

Exactly Andy - everyone agrees it probably needs some tweaking from bike shops to users but to make it a big culture war thing is so very Labour at the moment. Β£4k electric bike - middle class wanker; Β£25k+ car - salt of the earth working class

Exactly this - rather than focus on the v small % that are taking the p*ss, highlight the wider benefits that the scheme has!

Plus, what evidence does the un-named source have that the weekend e-bikes riders on the Surrey Hills used the scheme to buy the bikes? Bias showing through...

'Taxpayers shouldn't be footing the bill for luxury leisure' – Cycle to Work scheme expected to be limited in upcoming Budget A new cap is likely to be introduced

Cycling Weekly article points out the boost to the economy the scheme gives as I'm sure you're aware - for every Β£1 spent, Β£4.40 revenue is generated.

Also, that comment is more telling about the biases of the people looking at the people looking at changing the C2W scheme. Out of everyone using the scheme, what exceedingly small % are going to be using it for "weekend rides in the Surrey Hills"? Car brain as usual...

The city that reveals Britain's biggest problem: there's nowhere to live – video After a long summer defined by flags, protests and tensions over asylum, John Harris and John Domokos go back to Liverpool to explore the lives of people dealing with a huge housing crisis, while tryi...

Great piece by @johnharris1969.bsky.social on how the lack of housing creates problems and robs people of dignity and opportunity.

Also managed a glimpse of the Belmont pub round the corner from where I grew up. All those streets looked very familiar!

It's very clear already under current single market rules what's meat and what is a veggie alternative. Consumer safety is a smokescreen - there are already perfectly usable aws in place for ingredients, allergens markings, etc.

I've shopped for veggie meat alternatives (alongside the meat variants) in France, Netherlands and Germany. The veggie options are clear and very hard to confuse with meat products. They're also in their own 'veggie' section. This is simply corporate power flexing its muscles.

Got to make sure there are enough resources left to arrest those placard holding retired lecturers, doctors and civil servants though. C'mon - give them a break!

Agree - not a consequence of Brexit. Unfortunately, Britain (and the EU) has been exporting its waste plastic to the Far East (and latterly Turkey) for many years now.

Hi George, this predates Brexit unfortunately. We, and EU member states, have been exporting our waste plastic to the Far East for many years now. Arguably, there are less controls on waste than on food and flowers exports currently.

Exactly! Sorry was running out of characters to put down anymore detail and maybe could have been clearer. Excellent summary though and shows how quick it can be to get the actual footage of the incident!

Wonder whether part of this is the thought that they've have to look through more than 2 hours of footage. Which is ridiculous as you'd quickly be able to narrow it down into the hour it was stolen based on stills....

Motorcyclist on shopping trip arrested amid Labour’s crackdown on undocumented migrants Fernando Fontoura, who moved to the UK aged 12, detained in drive to find people β€˜illegally working’ as delivery drivers

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

This is just performative cruelly now, and a British version of ICE in the US.

Come over aged 12, do your GCSEs, get a national insurance number, work, pay taxes and freely travel in and out of the country on trips without any problems until now?
