The last time I was in the Joan Sutherland Theatre it was still called the Opera Theatre and I’m pretty sure I wore a cocktail dress. And heels.
There were a lot of costumed Yoof about in Circular Quay around 6.30-7pm.
Low-effort stand out was a young couple. He: cat ears, minimal other features. She: Hawaiian shirt, camera, map in hand.
Catboy and Tourist.
I know which I find more scary, certainly.
Sydney Harbour Bridge seen from the opposite side of Circular Quay. The sky is grey and gloaming but a faint hint of sunset can be seen low on the horizon. A large ferry is coming in to Circular Quay and a smaller one going out. A garish pink blob is Luna Park.
That’ll do, city, that’ll do.

I bristled, but on reflection I have no reason to think they were opera fans who were surprised to find musical theatre Good. Could be tourists who just wanted to see something At The Opera House.
I also note that the dress code for the Opera House has by social consensus slid more casual over my adult life, but I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve seen women in fishnets, tiny shorts and halter tops in those august halls. (They had smokey eyes, they’d dressed up more than I had!)
31.10.2025 11:41 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0I knew Opera Australia were doing something deliberate this year, staging both Hadestown and RENT - the latter actually in the Opera House, following straight on the heels of La Bohème.
I had somehow not calculated on that involving all three tiers of the Joan Sutherland Theatre loudly moo-ing 🤭
