I believe chasing the right on immigration is an international phenomenon? Must be a common explanation.

Could argue that all our political problems stem from the failures in how media cover it

Thatcher is the original sin but Howard is the last one not to actively make things worse

Fair point. Think your qu is incredibly important, those were my best offers but would love to see better explanations

Yeah it's not hard and should be expected of MPs that they know, as part of the job, but I fear at least some of them are pretty ignorant, right to the top

Possibly many of them don’t know (i), also possible many of them have much more right wing views than they care to admit to

No excuse for serious media giving this guy any further publicity after this

I'd never heard of this guy until a few months ago, now he's (a) saying stuff like this and (b) ubiquitous. How our media works

They have managed to lose half of the tiny number of Reform voters who liked Starmer, great job guys

16.05.2025 09:04 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

This seems obvious, so, genuine question, why is it being suggested? Where is this coming from?

02.05.2025 19:58 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Even if this is right, which it may well be, it still makes no sense

On the one hand, yes, amazing. On the other hand not as he is just behaving exactly the same way as he has for many years. Can’t keep being amazed by the same thing

Sidelining the OBR worked great for Truss

"Corruption disqualifies you from public office" seems to me almost self-evident, far from being a hard call. Democracy has to be protected, and that needs actions. 5 years is way too lenient

02.04.2025 10:36 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

She can play the game again in just 5 years. Why not a life ban?

02.04.2025 10:31 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

No10 figures believe something that was obviously, unmissably true several years ago

01.04.2025 22:46 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

And yet she can run for office again in 5 years. Like, in 5 years time she will once again be a fit person to run for office. What would you have to do to get a life ban?

I feel like it's mainly they hate everything with a side order of Europe isn't a nation state which is the only political entity that their ossified minds can understand

There's loads of votes to be had on the centre right, simpler explanation is just that many Tory MPs and members are hard right by conviction

23.02.2025 14:25 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Imv the reason they stick to the identity politics is a combination of it genuinely being the main thing they care about, which is why they were so bad at government, and that their only big win since Thatcher came when this was a key issue, so they're trying to recreate those conditions

Such people are irredeemable. Hating each other isn't a redeeming feature

21.02.2025 13:18 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

What does it say about the Tory party that it takes having actual military experience to decide to break with trump

I think "the system is rotten" is just the cover story. The real story is these people hate only having most of the power and have seen a chance to grab everything
