There's loads of votes to be had on the centre right, simpler explanation is just that many Tory MPs and members are hard right by conviction

Imv the reason they stick to the identity politics is a combination of it genuinely being the main thing they care about, which is why they were so bad at government, and that their only big win since Thatcher came when this was a key issue, so they're trying to recreate those conditions
