A MESSAGE FROM WWOZ GENERAL MANAGER BETH ARROYO UTTERBACK July 18, 2025 Dear Guardians of the Groove, This week Congress voted to revoke previously approved funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) which was earmarked and budgeted for the next two years. This represents $400,000 each year for WWOZ. While this is certainly a disappointing blow to our beloved station, it does not change our commitment to our mission of being the worldwide voice, archive and flag-bearer of New Orleans music and culture. This funding has historically been used for important infrastructure necessities including upkeep and maintenance for our broadcast transmitter, equipment, internet streaming for our worldwide audience. Additionally, CPB has historically negotiated and paid for broadcast and internet music licensing fees on behalf of the public stations like WWOZ. This is an added expense we will have to cover moving forward.

We have been formulating a plan to help bridge this important financial gap. Our team will be working diligently to increase support from foundations, corporate sponsorship, special events, and, of course, individual Guardians of the Groove who love WWOZ! We are also adding a new OZ fundraiser in the Washington D.C. area in November and plan an online auction featuring custom-made performance outfits worn by New Orleans music legends including Irma Thomas, Allen Toussaint and Cyril Neville. As we prepare to celebrate our 45th Birthday it's good to remember we started off with the humblest of beginnings...in a tiny beer storage room above Tipitina's. Since then, we have grown into a beloved, award-winning multimedia organization followed locally and worldwide via our radio waves, live streams, video and social media platforms. wwoz is a national treasure and with all of us working together, we will continue to thrive and Guard the Groove! Blows my mind that people who live in places where the temperature difference between comfort and external conditions in winter can be 100 degrees will complain about people cooling their houses 20 degrees in summer. Plus modern A/C is so much more efficient than gas furnaces it’s not even close.
