Total tourist fakery. Also re Mary's, those "it's a pub but also another business" WERE NEVER A THING IN DUBLIN (unlike in various places down the country where I have encountered a pub-undertakers, a pub-bike-shop, and in one magnificent example, a pub-shoeshop-dentist).

Between that and the proliferation of stupid fake "olde Irish" pubs that look like they were constructed from a kit....

Same. My house has gone in and out of negative equity over the years, I am just still happily living in it. I'm sure there's a potential crisis situation where it might make a difference but I don't want to base our entire housing policy on that.

I did have a weird argument on here or back in the other place with someone who thought negative equity was a disaster because they had to move around a lot for work and sold and bought a house every time rather than renting. Not sure if they realised how outlier-y this made them.

A huge reason for a lot of the housing and social problems that we have in Ireland in 2026: when the banking crash happened in 2008, there was this narrative that people in negative equity were the biggest victims of all.

Getting house prices back up was seen as "fixing the economy".
