…We made the *entire* final scene from Final Fantasy IX in full Disney Musical-as-audiodrama mode, and ultimately collaborated on Project ESPER, an ill-fated full musical adaptation Final Fantasy VI which got a lot of headway before being put on hold when our licensing plans fell through.

Jeff Swingle and I went all in with the musical theatre + classic JRPG mashups - we did stuff from Chrono Trigger (Frog’s Theme as a melancholy solo, The Trial, as a whole ensemble scene) I did another piece from Tactics (a comedic ensemble bit)… (continued)

Some people argue that different keys “feel” different, but I think that depends more on the orchestration - different ranges and notes fall differently on different instruments and have different feels. An instrument at the edge of its upper range can sound strained - or powerful - it just depends.

*Every* pitch-center can convey *any* emotion through melody, tempo/vibe shifts, harmonic choices, etc. (Note, I’m saying pitch-center, since just “key” would lock you to major or minor, when being unfettered from mode and flirting w/neighboring keys and borrowed chords can make all the difference.)

(To be fair, it’s not *all* the same tonic all the time, and I absolutely change modes, but it all has to flow from one state to any other state at any point, so writing in the same key or closely related keys makes sense.)
