I had thoughts but to think I was a gatekeeper for scientific rigor was laughable.

24.11.2025 16:28 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Yes, I realized that when I became a peer reviewer as a lowly grad student. (My PI asked me to do it and we discussed my comments but it was 95% me)
24.11.2025 16:28 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Yeah, my pcp made me get tested for it when I told her I was vegan. I was very close to the lower end of the healthy range so now I take B-12 supplements.
I thought I was eating enough nutritional yeast but apparently not.
If you are mainly reading e-books itโs definitely worth it. Their light is less likely to interrupt your sleep cycle, and itโs easier to focus with them.
23.11.2025 08:46 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0High school me would be very disappointed at the dearth of literature in my reading list. Maybe I should finally read the copy of Anna Karenina my dad gave me when I was 16.
22.11.2025 06:31 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0just when things were getting fun???
22.11.2025 06:20 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I assumed he was already taking GLP agonists, he lost a bunch of weight between running for senate and running for VP.
21.11.2025 06:58 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Confusingly, a type 3 is a type 1 that can go up to 28 mph instead of 20 mph. No throttle.
16.11.2025 08:47 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I guess I'm glad I went to a dual-language school and the 2nd language was Spanish. I would imagine this would have a harder time flying with a 100% phonetic language.
12.11.2025 06:56 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Tangentially, I learned somewhat recently that Orthodox Jews are allowed to go to mosques but not churches (at least catholic ones I guess) due to the idol worshipping and I found that quiet funny.
07.11.2025 08:57 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0It makes sense that if you attended another religion's service you would be respectful without actively participating in their activities?
07.11.2025 08:57 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I never heard of anything like that while growing up as catholic (granted I never paid much attention in mass or catechism classes).
From a quick google search, they are allowed to go to other places of worship?
Sorry, I misread your comment. Not sure how I managed to misread it now that I'm rereading it, thought you meant with "we do that too" as in "say first cousin once removed". My bad!
30.10.2025 05:11 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0That makes it a lot easier to keep in touch with childhood friends and extended family.
29.10.2025 07:11 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I wonder if the US being so large and moving for college / work being normalized has something to do with it.
My momโs country is small and there is only one major city. If you grew up there you would stay there unless you moved abroad.
My mom is Latin American and my dad is Italian; all their cousins are my aunts and uncles.
โFirst cousins once removedโ sounds extremely clinical and lacks warmth one would presumably have for a family member.
I once listened to a podcast where the guest said their โsecond cousinโ was โbarely related to themโ and I was so baffled. Theyโre your second cousin! Your parents were first cousins, do people just lose contact with their cousins once they reach adulthood??
29.10.2025 05:58 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0more evidence for my theory that white Americans do not care about their extended family. Iโve only seen the โonce removedโ term in the context of confusing genealogy. Itโs clinical and lacks any warmth for someone one might have affection towards.
All my parentsโ cousins are my uncles and aunts.
My mom isnโt a nerd/geek and is not particularly into SciFi but loved Next Generation while it was airing.
25.10.2025 22:56 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Does anyone want a free ticket to the event? I unfortunately canโt make it and canโt get a refund so someone might as well get my spot.
25.10.2025 22:48 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I agree, Iโd be more excited about him running for governor. Not sure of his appeal in CA as a whole versus SF though.

17.10.2025 06:59 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0As someone who is half-Italian but NOT Italian-American I am baffled every year by how Cristopher Columbus day is somehow Italian heritage day in the US.
Setting aside morality, there's so many brilliant Italians, and you pick the schmuck who planned what should have been a suicide mission?
How am I doing that by not owning a car?
12.10.2025 05:14 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Ah yes, Iโa Californianโwould never give up my car.
Mainly because Iโve never owned a car and donโt even have a driving license.
If real, best thing to happen in the last 9 months.
Worst week in SF every year.
Even the name is cute! Topolino - "little mouse."
28.09.2025 06:59 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I read his book about it and he's almost apologetic over not having any great solutions for it.
21.09.2025 07:23 โ ๐ 17 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I think the left did not adopt that particular attitude. The left was more likely for quite some time to try to keep someone like Kirk or Ben Shapiro from speaking on campus than to happily debate with them and do the reverse โ which is like, "Can you do a speaking tour of evangelical churches?" Can you actually go into the places you feel are most hostile to you and treat that as an interesting place to begin a conversation, even if only to sharpen your own arguments?
Heโs been on a roll with terrible takes the last two weeks. In that same interview he made a comment about liberals should try to do what Kirk did but in Evangelical churches. I canโt get over untethered from reality the take is.
20.09.2025 03:11 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Isnโt โtarrifs lower aggregate supply leading to stagflationโ econ 101 stuff?
Is this a case of knowing the nuances about a field leading one astray? Or did those people not even know basic econ?
Or โEcon is a SOFT science we cannot trust the conclusions of economists!โ
