I’ve always cared about NC news, and the longer I was gone, the harder I found it to understand the forces shaping the state. How was the influx of new people influencing the economy and culture? Who were the most powerful decision-makers in the state? The Assembly is dedicated to answering those questions. So I moved back this spring and dove in.

Editor Emily Stephenson gotten to do a lot of unusual things as a journalist. She's flown on Air Force One. She's been to Iowa on caucus night and Las Vegas on debate night. Once, she filed a story from a beach in Honolulu, with snorkel gear still on.
