NASA’s actually running low on fuel for RTGs (plutonium 238), since the reactor that they used to produce it hasn’t been in operation since the 80s. I strongly suspect this is the main reason they want to use a fission reactor

For almost a decade NASA’s been working on a long-term manned mission to the moon, which would require some kind of nuclear power to get through lunar nights. A fission reactor actually kinda makes sense in this case since NASA’s actually running out of the plutonium isotope fuel for RTGs

You have the same issue with non-fission RTGs which use plutonium fuel. The biggest risk with nuclear power in space is if they’re in a low earth orbit, since eventually the orbit will decay and end up back on earth. If you yeet the stuff out into deep space you’re fine as soon as you reach orbit

apparently if you get it in bulk like from a plumbing supplier it doesn't have the issue. The problem comes from when gaming companies repackage it and leave it in storage for years on end. but yeah, tamiya (like most of what they sell) is much more dependable if you can get it.
