#Romania election results thread: Dan (Liberal/ Independent) won the Romanian presidential election with a big lead domestically. Even though the diaspora vote had favoured Simion, it wasn’t sufficient to swing the results.

The European Union is perhaps a bit like the Sagrada Familia: an enormous, far-fetched, idealistic project of historic dimensions.

A project of complex architecture in which each new generation plays its part to meet the challenges of its time.

Merz elected chancellor in second round after falling short in first. German govt can finally get to work. Today's hiccups will either fade fast with decisive actions - or they become taste of challenges ahead for this coalition.

Either way, time for Europe to take expectations of Merz down a notch

Big result overnight in Romania's first round presidential election. Populist nationalist George Simion coming in at 41% when polls had him at 30%. Senior EU officials v very worried Romania is going to be the next populist shoe to drop, with big implications for the EU, NATO & poss Ukraine

Romania: With over 94% of the votes counted, the second round will be between the right-wing candidate Simion (AUR–ECR) and the Mayor of Bucharest, Dan (*–RE). The runoff will take place on 18 May.
