I am now at the point where I'm scratching at the door of the local school district inquiring about the labyrinthine employment process, and one of the people who replied has this in their sig--*still* has this in their sig, in Q4 2025!--which I am taking to be a good sign.

3XY phagrin level 3XY phagrin level was a phrase mentioned in the top secret file entitled "Talos IV". According to the file, known facts about Talos IV were "detailed information cross referenced with 3XY phagrin leve...

Considering how much nonsense from the first Star Trek series gets referenced in later shows, I always enjoy coming across something which (at least according to Memory Alpha) nobody's bothered to resurrect. Case in point: "3XY phagrin level - mass computer." memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/3XY_pha...

Atlanta Journal, November 19, 1966.

We are two girls who are desperately in love with Mr. Spock, the magnificent unemotional half-earth half-Vulcan man on "Star Trek". We also want a write-in for Mr. Spock for governor. Where can we get a life-sized autographed picture of this beautiful man???

San Francisco Municipal Record, November 19, 1925. Boomers: they have always existed, and they have always shook their fists at The Kids These Days.

"Nobody can maintain that printing has produced greater poets, or philosophers, than they who wrote when books were confined to manuscript."

Period films in which the male lead looks at their reflection while pretending to conduct an orchestra: Kevin Kline in Alan J. Pakula's SOPHIE'S CHOICE; Robert Downey, Jr. in Richard Attenborough's CHAPLIN.

True story: I have not attended a Star Trek convention since 2011, but I would happily go to one now if I thought it meant I could purchase a DISCOVERY-era jacket--in no small part because of how good they looked when unzipped, especially on Admiral Cornwell.

I mean, the coast has belonged to us all since long before the Great Highway was rebranded as Sunset Dunes earlier this year--to use an arbitrary date, since at least the opening of the Ocean Beach Pavilion in 1884--but who's counting? HOORAY SUNSET DUNES FINALLY MAKES THE COAST OURS AT LAST

Also, while I'm sure the crew is up to date on their TDAP vaccines, it still seems like a bad idea to beam them down right next to a pointy eyesore of a sculpture whose entire purpose appears to be to lacerate flesh.

IMO, "The Menagerie, Part 1" is as Roddenberry as Roddenberry gets: most of the first 60 seconds is both the camera and Kirk eye-fucking a hot idiot who clearly doesn't understand how transporters work, since she keeps watching the skies and seems surprised when the crew materializes on the ground.

Indianapolis News, November 18, 1966.

Roddenberry went to work with scissors and paste and created a two-part, two-hour story using up most of the film from the unsuccessful Hunter-version Star Trek pilot.

The tale, titled "The Menagerie," started last night and will be concluded next Thursday.

Minneapolis Star, November 18, 1966. Deep down, I think Leonard Nimoy knew exactly what would happen to his career.

"I was offered nothing but doctor and lawyer parts until Spock came along," the actor said. "I have no idea what a Vulcanian image will do for me when 'Star Trek' runs its course."

The unsolvable puzzle. Tripping once, on a balcony in Washington overlooking the National Cathedral. Smoking what I did not know was my final cigarette. Unless someone offers me a Capri, which does not count. The great cosmic riddle, I figured I had solved it. The joke was that the joke was never done being told.

My last film review was published six years ago this week on November 15, 2019, and both the papers I wrote for have long since folded, yet I still keep ending up on new publicists' mailing lists. It's almost as if nobody's paying attention.

I was recently dunking on Stewart Raffil's trashy 1984 THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT for all the Coke product placement, so it's only fair to point out that Alan J. Pakula's hyper-respectable 1982 SOPHIE'S CHOICE lovingly focuses on Spam and Band-Aids during its first 10 minutes.

I experienced this phenomenon in a big way when I was the acting manager of my library branch for 16 months during the pandemic. In particular, the middle-aged cishet white women on the staff resented me sooooo much, and refused to take me seriously or follow any of my instructions.

Fresno Bee, September 25, 1984. Was 11-y/o Sherilyn terribly excited about the prospect of finally seeing the Star Trek Blooper reel which she'd thus far only read about in the Best of Trek books, and was her VCR all warmed up and ready to go? Oh my yes, to both questions.
