I saw on the news this morning that Les Mis is returning to the stage in France, inspired to import over here what I think was my greatest thread Over There.

Les Mis debuted in 1980, just as mass incarceration was taking off. It warned us, we didn't listen. Its lyrics are a syllabus on CJ reform:

It is also worth mentioning that < 500 US universities and colleges participate in NCAA D1 athletics. There are so many other options.

And if you think universities lose $$$ on athletics, how do you explain why more and more keep doing it? It's like looking at the advertising division of a company and saying "There are no sales, only costs, therefore this division of the company loses $$$."

This would not end big $$$ in US college sports, but it would make it easier for any schools who want to pursue education without maintaining multiple professional sports teams.

Instead, even public schools are privatized. Therefore the schools must compete for eyeballs, applicants, students, $$$. Without sufficient public funding, this is what maintains the institution. And athletics is extremely effective at this.

Anyone serious about this would call for making US higher education a true public good, as it is in surely all the comparison countries he is thinking of.

The most precious commodity you have is your attention. You don’t have to waste it on poor-faith debates or arguments with strangers if you don’t think they’ll be productive. You can prioritize the things that matter to you and make your life richer.

Yes, and in Russia where a majority of physicians are women, doctoring is considered a lowly profession and doctors are underpaid; as a result, the country is running out of doctors.

Misogyny kills men in so many ways and yet they’re not willing to give it up, even to save their own lives.

Tell Students the Truth About American History We owe it to Americans of all ages to be honest about the country’s past, including its contradictions.

I spent October traveling to schools throughout the South talking to students about American history. What I found were young people who understand we can tell a story that includes both the positive and the negative. As one 8th grader in Memphis said, β€œDoesn’t seem that hard, just say both things.”
