I would add a third point which is that different doctors take different insurance providers, and depending on where you live, that can be the main thing that determines how much you spend. I don't think you can separate out the legitimacy of the question in the abstract from the fact that it is almost always asked in response to someone criticizing Israeli policy. I don't assume everyone asking it is a hardliner, but also, ime, no one brings it up out of nowhere.

And also you can absolutely buy socks that are mendable. The menswear guy is always writing about how people are constantly complaining about the quality of clothes but the vast majority of people *refuse* to pay what quality clothes, made by people earning a living wage cost.

If I recall correctly, one of the main criticisms of Mamdani throughout the campaign was that the mayor is more limited in authority than his policy promises implied, so I think this is a pretty natural first step to making big policy changes. He doesn’t have much time, after all!

It's not just uncool and cringe to be idealistic, it's also uncool and cringe to be diligent, to have plans that require, most of all, showing up to work every day. Leslie Knope, along with lots of effective bureaucracies and businesses, are uncool on both counts!

I agree it's not popular, but lots of rancid crooks get elected against people who aren't socialists. On the whole, people seem to not mind rancid crooks that much, I don't think you can put this on socialism.
