This feels like some kind of weird exploit you would take advantage of in Football Manager so you can pay for the overpriced fitness coach you want to hire for your cash-poor 2nd division team that you are trying to get promoted.

And it's way worse and dumber than that, because what if you gave your Sims API hooks so they can take actions in the digital world on your behalf and fuck up your whole life? And were paradoxically even less cautious about that because you no longer have the game/simulation frame to lampshade it?

Reading up on the Moltbook / OpenClaw stuff, and the best analogue I'm seeing for this is the "AI" that runs video game NPCs. Like, huge advance, you can now turn your Sims loose on the internet. It's still fundamentally a simulation, you're just believing in it harder because the context changed.

And TBH most AI-generated text is the product of trying to apply this worldview and workflow to writing and it is superficially competent and coherent but juiceless, repetitive, and formulaic. Code doesn't need a POV or *cringes* a "soul" to work, but writing worth reading does.

Coding is also a highly structured form of expression for which there was a whole lot of well-labeled and contextualized training data, a pre-existing scaffolding of tooling and process to leverage and fit to, and very clear-cut ways to test success or failure and iterate.

I feel like this is an underrated distortion of the AI hype cycle. Coders are closest to this tech, and they be like "it can replace me, and coding is the pinnacle of intelligence, so surely it can replace everyone below me too! If it can code, then wordcel and artsy crap is just trivial." Maybe.

I was using it to evoke the false sense of permanence that white collar workers had, but yeah, it's a fun meme until you think about it for like 5 seconds 🤷‍♂️

I think there is a sense of "But we played the game the right way! We, climbed the meritocratic ladder, excelled at every stage, did what we were supposed to, and turned ourselves into incredibly productive and expert workers. And now that all means nothing?" And, yes, precisely. Because *workers*.

The power we had was incidental, based on contingent historical & economic arrangements. We were not organized or prepared to defend ourselves, and even worse, our lack of cross-class solidarity as workers means nobody else is sympathetic or showing up to save our institutions or projects either.

There's a link between the AI disruption and the authoritarian political attacks on expertise. Highly educated white collar folks considered ourselves to be a powerful culture, on the basis of our expertise & credentials. But that's not where power comes from, and we're learning that the hard way.
