You put scare quotes around “untraceable” as though being really good at this weren’t the entire point of cryptocurrencies. It’s not illegal to trade crypto, and the issue of conversion to fiat is trivial when you can literally still buy BTC with cash from ATMs.

There are other currencies besides BTC which don’t have public blockchains. That he was only caught when he mis-sent one transaction once while moving thousands routinely anyway is evidence of the contrary.
