People have been using watermelons since 2023, and I just noticed that the contention is that the date on the flyer is MLK Jr. That coincidence actually makes reinforcing said historical memory for this specious reason a bit racist in itself, tbh; even more so if to score points by doing so.

Those prohibitions are long gone, and I personally think the watermelons now serve to diminish the symbolism of Palestine as a nation when supplanted by the flag.

However, it’s totally absurd to tie it to the racist symbolism it has only in North America. There are Black Palestinians as well, yk.

It’s a callback to when “Israel” forbade the Palestinian nationally banner, during which Palestinians adorned the colors of the flag in a variety of creative forms (watermelons being one.)
