26.07.2025 14:50 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0My dadโs favorite anecdote about me was that when I was 4, he heard screaming and ran outside to find me dangling by my teeth from the thumb of a 6th grader while another was holding his bleeding hand. They had had tried to take my big wheel. This is the energy with which I try to meet every day.
25.07.2025 15:32 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Dear fellow academics, is there anyone out there pushing ahead fueled by anything besides spite? What would that even look like??
25.07.2025 15:26 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0For the ephys weirdos (like me), note the speed of these neurons - most cells can fire at 500+ Hz for an entire second, have AP half-widths of <200 us, and are just silly fast. But to foreshadow (I hope) - they may not be the biggest or fastest neurons in the auditory system.
21.07.2025 21:44 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Very pleased to have this out, major kudos to Reggie, Ken Hutson (for the beautiful light sheet images), Malcolm Lutz (histological reconstruction), and Paul Manis (all the things). 6/6
21.07.2025 21:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Histologically, these neurons demonstrated pruning of basal dendrites following the onset of hearing, with an increase in the oldest group, suggesting remodeling with the onset of age related hearing loss. 5/6
21.07.2025 21:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0We didn't work out the specific channels underlying these changes (voltage clamp in these large, fragile neurons is very challenging), but we did see an increase in the rate of repolarization, suggesting a possible increase in potassium channels (Kv3s?). 4/6
21.07.2025 21:21 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Electrophysiologically, these neurons are largely stable through the first year, but at >p550 (roughly ~55-65 years in humans), where we start to see significant changes in auditory threshold/magnitude and structural changes in the cochlea, fusiform neurons speed up! 3/6
21.07.2025 21:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0These are large, fragile auditory brainstem neurons that receive both direct and indirect auditory input and sensorimotor feedback. Previously, these neurons have been examined during development (p4-p21), but I believe this is the first examination of these neurons after ~p35 in mouse. 2/6
21.07.2025 21:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0PREPRINT FUN!! Led by our soon-to-be PhinisheD graduate student Reginald Edwards, we looked at the electrophysiological and histological properties of dorsal cochlear nucleus fusiform neurons (principal output neurons) with age, from p15 up to p578 in CBA/CaJ mice (mice with normal hearing). 1/6

19.07.2025 02:32 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0My father was involved in engineering this in the 1980s/1990s, at the time a farmer had to install hardware to improve localization because GPS was limited to ~300โ. But it was clear that the future was detection of pests, water, soil quality to direct seed density and fertilizer. Cool stuff!
