But if Kamala didn’t run on identity issues, why would the Republicans flog those issues relentlessly?

Completely agree, but if that’s not what I’m communicating when I explain it, I need to change who I explain it.

Gonna have to think of this. I have a family member who was extremely niche influencer until accusations came out and I’ve always said he got MeTooed when explaining it. My intent is to indicate that his bad private actions became public and there were consequences, but I understand the critique.

The one I always think about is West Virginia. From a presidential perspective, it was a reliably Democrat vote for 70ish years, swung to Bush in 2000, and just seems to keep getting redder and redder since.

It’s fun and remains the only Rider series I’ve watched start to finish (and that was back before fan subs). I’ll probably randomly chant β€œAH-MA-ZOOOONN!” well into my dotage.

I’m convinced that this is how the Trump-voters-in-a-diner genre started, but then they lost the β€œget a load of these assholes” subtext to the stories and just kept doing them anyway.

I used to work in an office where we had a typewriter at the front desk. Whenever I used it, clients thought it was so cute and quaint. They were unaware that it was because an already signed deed was messed up and we had to fix it before recording.

Joseph Heller’s β€œPicture This” changed the way I (a history degree holder) think about repeating patterns and personalities throughout history.

I’m curious if refugees resettling from San Francisco or Chicago or something would settle elsewhere in enough numbers to warp political outcomes.

Strong agree on these two, though I will take Ebirah Horror of the Deep over the horribly generic Godzilla vs the Sea Monstwr

Not that insurance companies will be less greedy, necessarily, but because the consumer will finally be able to negotiate. Just two equally positioned and powered parties, the massive insurance conglomerate and the individual median consumer. The consumer will surely extract better cheaper coverage.

Wait, do the Bond films actually have a strict continuity?

As a Godzilla fan, it seems like a non-issue to me. Just start a new continuity where you reference previous movies X and Y but not Z etc.

There were…a LOT of persecutions and conflict as people tried to figure out just how much Jesus was god versus man. Particularly in the first millennium of the common era. It’s kind of astounding how little we care about it today versus then.

Anyone mentioning the Annunaki is just nuts.

The best hypothesis I’ve seen so far is that she is doing this to give the First Circuit time to issue its actual order before the case gets to all the SCOTUS ghouls. This is made under her individual assignment and her stay expires 48 hours after the First Circuit issues its opinion, IIRC.

It’s confusing that Houston is not considered to be on the east coast.

Oh man, I knew (the majority of) South America is east of Michigan and Reno is west of Los Angels, but Detroit being east of Atlanta is going to mess with my sense of geography for a while.

Without condoning the system, the entire process is categorized as civil or administrative in nature, which is why due process rights are different and immigration courts are under the executive, not judicial, branch.

In practice - especially but not only now - it’s hellacious.

Correct, that is a welcome clarification.

One reason that so many state legislators are also (small) law firm partners. Much easier to make your own hours and then use the proximity to power to make your firm more appealing.

07.11.2025 15:34 β€” πŸ‘ 120    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Correct. I believe a more faithful (and less racist) reading of the Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments should mandate counsel in these cases, but SCOTUS has disagreed for decades.

07.11.2025 14:15 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Should be, but the current state of the law is that deportation is a civil proceeding for which your due process rights do not entitle you to counsel. It’s a categorical (and racist) approach that ignores the reality of the experience and outcomes.

For a second I thought they were talking about the studio that made the video do Igorrr’s β€œVery Noise” and I was intrigued, but then I remembered that’s Meat Department and my ambivalence has returned.

As a wee lad back in 1997 I was so bummed at how small Destroyer’s wings were. Now I miss that collection (stupid basement water damage)

And, if you’re working from real world cultures, making sure it’s time appropriate. For example, we all think of Magnus as a proper Scandinavian name, but don’t you name your 9th century viking character that because it wasn’t introduced to the Norse nomenclature until ~ 1024.

My general recommendation for this is Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster. Fast paced, just serious enough, just silly enough, and it introduces them to four of Toho’s five biggest kaiju.

If they’re younger, Godzilla be Megalon. G’s a hero, the fight is easy to follow, + big robot + weird paddle boat

On the one hand, yes, I think parents would have to help with building this, but on the other hand, 8th graders are the single most vile age bracket for asshole edgelords (proportionate to the entire cohort), so…

I’m just saying, my 8th grader’s classmates could come up with something like this
