OK a few of those crossings will be at night but many will be at higher rates (HGVs etc.) but at current bond yields should be enough to borrow £3 or 4bn for an extensive cross river rail transit system. 🙂 Might need to leave a few ££s for maintenance of existing structures.

Guess what Gareth is saying is HS2 will be full (eventually) so even though a Birmingham-Paris passenger may be as valuable as one from London why spend £bns providing for them? Notable that Paris has an (albeit shorter) HS bypass joining two of the busiest HS lines.

What about this slightly crazy proposal? I'm sure now Gatwick expansion has been greenlighted the airport's operators will be more than happy to throw in a few £bn
