I know the OP is Italian, but as a Southerner who lives in the North I frequently encounter the same attitude. I call it cosmopolitan provincialism.

Racism is a matter of the heart. You can vote for a party for a lot of reasons, many of which have nothing to do with morality. A significant percentage of abolitionists who opposed slavery as an institution would have no trouble with the idea of white supremacy.

I’m not giving them “zero credit.” We’re talking about racism and private morality. It’s just dumb and historically illiterate to suggest that the North was inherently less racist just because they were pro-union.

I’m going to start ending any and all communications, even with my wife, with “Thank You for Your Attention to this Matter.”

Maybe so, but that’s irrelevant to the point I’m trying to make, which is that most people in the North didn’t oppose slavery for moral reasons. The overwhelming majority of them would be considered racist by today’s standards.

It’s not like the North was so enlightened and teeming with anti-slavery sentiment. The South was much more agrarian and dependent on slave labor.
