Friends from Minneapolis reporting to me that things are at the point where folks are being hidden in other people's houses and we are in the "again" part of "never again" which the "never" was supposed to preclude

Every time I re-read Trump v. United States, it feels like getting hit in the head with a mallet.

this case is maybe the single best example of one of the most destructive tendencies of this court: the tendency to treat their job as a collegiate legal seminar where they operate in hypotheticals rather than deal with the real world as it exists

The Supreme Court Lives in Fox News' America A Court that does not share a common factual world with the people it governs is untethered from democratic reality.

The problem with the Supreme Court supermajority is not just one of ideology or politics, but of epistemology. The world as they understand it bears little resemblance to reality www.liberalcurrents.com/the-supreme-...

This is the 38th time that the U.S. military has unlawfully killed civilians on the orders of Pete Hegseth and Donald Trump. At least 130 people β€” never charged with crimes, their identities unknown to their executioners β€” are now dead.

The paper contains a form of truly seedy emotional blackmail inside its spurious argument that β€œartificial general intelligence” is the same as β€œintelligence” in humans: that to deny LLMs general intelligence means you also have to say this or that human being does not have any intelligence.

Screencap of linked blog post: AgΓΌera y Arcas is making the analogy β€œLLMs are like Deafblind people”, ostensibly to show how LLMs are more like people. But he hasn’t shown (and, I’d argue, can’t) that LLMs are like people, with internal lives, relationships, and full personhood. So the analogy ends up dehumanizing Deafblind people, by saying they are like something that is patently not human, and saying so specifically because of their disability. And even if you believe that LLMs might be somewhat human-like, the analogy is still dehumanizing, in saying that Deafblind people are closer to these (ostensibly) partially human-like objects than other people. And that, in turn, suggests that non-Deafblind people are more fully human.

Disabling Intelligences This book discusses the influences of eugenics on the AI industry and the impacts of AI opportunism on disabled people.

But now we are fortunate to have @fractalecho.bsky.social 's amazing book out in the world. Read it to be better prepared to recognize & combat ableism and eugenics in "AI" discourse.

Screencap reading: They don’t have bodies. Without embodiment, critics argue, there can be no general intelligence. This reflects an anthropocentric bias that seems to be wielded only against AI. People would ascribe intelligence to a disembodied alien communicating by radio, or to a brain sustained in a vat. An entity that responds accurately to any question, but never moves or acts physically, would be regarded as profoundly intelligent. Physicist Stephen Hawking interacted with the world almost entirely through text and synthesized speech, yet his physical limitations in no way diminished his intelligence. Motor capabilities are separable from general intelligence.

the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women β€” and interactions with them β€” through the lens of sex
