So far this month, the Lower 48 average precipitation value is ~0.57". If you extrapolate this for the remainder of the month, it would make October 2024 the second driest month on record (1895-present). The driest (any month) was October 1952. The Lower 48 average was 0.52". @alaskawx.bsky.social

Something that caught my eye this morning. No rain has fallen in NYC and Philly in Oct & the newest NBM keeps them dry for the rest of the month.
If accurate, it will be the very first time they record 0.00" for an entire month. Records go back to 1869 (NYC) & 1872 (PHL)

Map shows season to date precipitation departures for the lower 48 states. Highlights that most places that have seen above average rainfall were impacted by tropical systems
Itβs been a tale of two falls so far this season across the country. Unless youβve been impacted by severe flash flooding from a tropical system things have been very very dry.

That's a pretty decent atmospheric river coming into Western Washington through the weekend. About 1-2" in the Seattle lowlands, but up to 4-8" in the Olympics and N. Cascades. Since still early in season, rivers should be able to hold it. #wxsky #wawx

This week I was able to use Sentinel-2 imagery in order to highlight the impact Helene had on the Appalachians. Comparing images from this time last year to now clearly shows the dramatic changes in the landscape after hundreds of landslides.

Bit of an unusual heavy rain event to set up across NE New Mexico this weekend. Some places could see as much rain in two days as they average over the next 5-8 months!

Forecast: 5-8"
Avg rain Oct-May: 6.38"
Tucumcari, NM
