I think people saw a more vulnerable group to abuse in Disney Adults than NFL fans could ever be. A familiar story.

Oh, definitely. And I do think there was some backlash against the NFL itself for CTE and Colin Kaepernick around the same time. But you’re absolutely right that the fans — very much to blame for anti Kaepernick bullshit at least — didn’t get much heat.

So people (assholes) who would naturally think it was weird for grownups to be into Disney were never gonna like the concept of Disney Adults, and liberals who would otherwise not really care suddenly had a reason to dislike them too.

I think the term came to popularity around the time there was some real toxicity coming from a small but vocal subset of Disney fans… Things like complaining about changing Splash Mountain or objecting to LGBTQ characters in the movies and stuff.
