"One of the reasons I am so passionate about open source is that I worry that if people believe that technology is magic, then we find ourselves in a dangerous situation. We essentially become slaves to tech.
The people behind these companies, the people who make these rules, they’re also people. You’re a person, too. You have as much intelligence and capability as these other people have. They just haven’t revealed to you that you could do it. They’ve tried hard to hide it from you, and so you think it’s magic and you have to consent to these things. It’s very important for me to make sure that people who are using technology, if they ever feel trapped or if they feel lost or if they don’t feel that they have ownership of their life again, there’s a path they can walk. I really value free will
A lot of times at the end of the day part of the idea of seeing the world as a hacker and not seeing the labels on things and seeing things for the, that’s kind of the essence of free will. Like, you don’t tell me what this is. I see it. And a lot of the idea behind open source and sharing and sharing the idea of hacking is teaching people how to have that sense of free will and independence that ability to control their destiny"
I don't think anybody has described the value of open source in the way Andrew Huang has, that essentially its to demystify the prestige around knowledge that comes with labels and preconceptions on how hard something is supposed to be

Lovely work from Saravanan and colleagues, they insert the 13aa alfa tag into actin and then use an Alexa-nanobody to monitor actin in expansion microscopy in yeast and human cells. This is an excellent tool for actin research, and the general principle can be applied to a variety of other proteins.
