Showing my daughter An American Tail for the first time. People have forgotten because of the Disney Renaissance, but it truly is striking the degree to which Don Bluth just ate Disney's lunch throughout the 1980s.

But I think folks of the broad left half of politics have a frustrating tendency towards assumptions of bad faith and refusal to engage with criticism that is... not effective at persuading people who don't already agree with you.

In this particular instance, I'm of two minds; the interlocutor Ben mentioned can be notably abrasive, so I can see her needlessly alienating him. On the other hand, Ben is particularly fragile and aggressive, so the die may have been cast as soon as he chose this subject.

The Commendatore, very mean, very unfair to me! Did not like me talking with Donna Anna even though I was a total gentleman! He challenged me to a duel and died like a dog. But I'm a nice guy! He's mean to me, but still, I invite him to dinner! Believe me, my laughter will last long after sunrise!

Was fascinating/frustrating being in AP Gov with her, and an interesting lesson in the weirdness of political demographics, because she was notably more right-wing than anyone else, but also notably lower socio-economic status than the median for the school.

I sat next to a girl in high school AP Government who was bonkers for Keyes. We watched the debates (taped on VHS) in class and she would whisper things like "I just don't understand why nobody's taking him seriously..." when he spoke.

I mostly remember reading Bonfire of the Vanities in college and there was a character who was a broad caricature of him. Just a transactional, corrupt opportunist using racism accusations to make money. Even knowing very little about JJ, it made me say, "Is this book... pretty racist?"

And like, sure, but if leftists are being shitty and wrong in a way that ordinary people encounter, it's not great advertising for The Left Project! I would prefer people I generally agree with to be right, and not wrong, and also not shitty!

That second one really irritates me; it's his way of admitting he's wrong without admitting it. "Sure, leftists are wrong and shitty about [whatever] but why waste your time on that when there are fascists in the White House!"

Hobbes occasionally makes a funny or interesting point, but I get really sick of his schtick when challenged:
1. "Nobody is saying this!" (People are saying it in his replies, or he is saying it himself)
2. "Sure, that MAY be true, but there are MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO CARE ABOUT!!!"

This is how I suspect a lot of the recissions/impounding will be resolved; They'll kick the can to the next congress by saying congress has to be a party to any challenge, then they'll delay that ruling as long as possible, then say "Well, those fiscal years are over so we can't force spending now"

I suspect there will be some major rulings against Trump, and they will be carefully delayed and timed to come out sometime around December of 2028. A lot of sound and fury about how dare he, coupled with "Whoops, too late for a remedy, well, presidents definitely can't do this going forward."

Also worth nothing that a major arrow in the Supreme Court's quiver is docket chicanery; overturning lower courts on the shadow docket and slow-walking decisions (that might ultimately be negative) for Trump to let him have his fun, swift cert and denial for Biden.

It's kind of a shame that people are bad at recalling past mental states in polling, even regarding empirical actions (misrecalled/mistated votes, e.g.), because I'd genuinely be interested in anti-bathroom-bill-to-pro-bathroom-bill flippers. What happened over 10 years to change their minds?

Adamβs right. Itβs more important than ever that our institutions defend First Amendment rights, and that means not firing teachers illegally whether their offense was βGo ICEβ or saying something less than hagiographical about Charlie Kirk. Fewer people want to hear that in ugly times.
