But in a political environment where we're seeing 10%+ swings towards Dems in districts all over the country, you run the risk of a massive backfire where you don't win those competitive districts and you turn stronghold districts competitive in the process.

This result last night illustrates the risk the GOP is running headlong into with gerrymandering.

By it's nature, gerrymandering spreads your voters thinner across the districts, pulling GOP voters out of stronghold districts and moving them into other more competitive districts to steal seats...

I think the answer is - if you have a tie for a spot in your conference title game that can't be sorted by head-to-head outcomes, you have to go to some kind of rankings to break the tie, whether that's the CFP rankings or some sort of combo of different ranks like FPI, Sagarin, CFP, etc

Moving Bama ahead of Notre Dame for seemingly no reason last week served one purpose - giving the committee a plausible path to getting Miami into the CFP if Duke managed to win the title game.
