That's quite a run. I hope I can go back sometime. I've only been twice and I spent most of my time there in the foam sword LARP arena thing. Not really "gaming" in the traditional sense, but a lot of fun. The personal ability score tests were brutal.

I think I'd probably have fun even if it's not exactly the style of play I naturally gravitate toward. It'd be closer to my jive than what's most popular now - not to yuck anyone's yum.

I feel like you'd have to agree on a bunch of it beforehand, for sure. If I run my orcs stupid and you run yours smart, for example, someone's having a much easier time.

My DMing style has always more or less been to set up a sandbox that I think is neat, that I hope you will also think is neat, and adjudicate play in it opening the book as infrequently as possible, so probably I just don't have the right nerd software for this kind of thing to begin with.

The entire allure of old-school fantasy games for me is how good they were as make-your-own-fun toolboxes. It would never even occur to me to run them as competitive games.

It's always been amusing to me that D&D tournament play was most common during the lifespan of the least "balanced" era of the game with the most DM fiat. It's possible that things were streamlined from RAW (I wasn't there), but holy shit what a bad game to play competitively.

We have a way shorter name for this.
