I feel like the anti-immigration sentiment of today, to give it entirely more credit than it earns, carves out a (literal) grandfather-clause exception for 1800s-1900s immigration, as many Americans' (white European) ancestors arrived in that time.

Trump and MAGA are incredibly toxic to the GOP brand. Unless they can rig every election in the US for the foreseeable future - and if they could they'd already be doing it - they're going to need to reckon with that and so is the servile media.

MAGA emphatically doesn't know better, and neocons resent that and think it bodes ill for the right-wing project.

Neocons imagined themselves as a quasi-Leninist revolutionary vanguard, using myths to direct the energy of the masses but holding themselves above the propaganda they spread, recognizing it as necessary fabricated narratives.

I would also note that many key founding neocons were mid-century socialists of some stripe and as in the regimes of Lenin, Stalin, and Mao conceived of the ruling elite as creators of mythic false-reality propaganda to compel the masses but wound up living and believing in their lies themselves.
