End of the day our system of laws made it possible for Trump to do a lot of things where the legal constraints were powerless to stop him. If you don’t fix that all a punishment of Trump will do is ensure the next person goes further to stay out of court.

I don’t know the answer to this but I wonder how these compare to examples of Truth and Reconciliation Committees (South Africa, Canada, Peru, South Korea) that were not prosecution focused but prevention focused.

I’m with you there. Media narratives are very good at finding the most repulsing examples of horrifying crimes to manufacture consent for harsher and harsher punishments. But it often just makes things worse. There’s a reason laws like “life in prison for kidnapping” made things much worse.
