I am very well aware that there are plenty of use cases for AI but it is not my job to say "okay, ignore the people who are claiming stupid shit that these tools cannot do, here's the cool stuff that it actually can do" and it's their own fault that they are selling it that way.

You are allowed to say that the GOP's self-stated belief in the sanctity of the 1950s and an Americana consisting of a white suburban family making apple pie while watching football was always a lie, but it is still a belief. It is a statement of values. And that's gone now.

Saying that this is who they always were is true insofar as, say, Charlie Sheen was always dealing with drug problems throughout his career. But that didn't stop him from showing up and doing his job until the day that it completely torpedoed his career and public image beyond repair forever.

And you can say that this was something that was always true to some extent, a fact that I would broadly agree with. You can lay the original sin at the feet of Reagan. But the thing about losing your damn mind is that it's slow until it is very, VERY fast.

Like, you could argue convincingly that Homeland Security was created to function fundamentally as Bush's Police Force, but the thing is that it was supposed to present as Not That.

The modern GOP sees no value in pretending it's Not That. It just says "yep, these are our jackbooted thugs!" No lie.

In order, the thing is that up until 10 years ago, the GOP generally agreed on points like "you can't just say blatantly racist shit" and "you aren't supposed to emulate the Nazis." You can argue that this was the ideological end point, sure, but there was still a material difference between them.

I see people responding to this with "well, actually, it stretches further back than that" and there are two things to consider:

1) no, it really doesn't, disagreeing with the GOP agenda (which I do) doesn't mean that there is no material difference between now and then
2) going insane is a process
