We'll provide the ingredients to create healthy meals together while discussing nutrition.

Afterwards, we'll enjoy a dinner party with friends from the community.

Making the clarion call for book research: I'm looking to interview #ActuallyAutistic LGBTQ+ people to ask how their gender identity intersects with their autism. Let me know if you'd be interested in speaking. EMGarcia2009@gmail.com.

Can Social Skills Ever Be Neuro-Affirming?
Column 1: WHAT THEY USUALLY DO:
Shame ND ways of thinking, feeling, playing, and socializing;
Frame NT ways as the right way and ND ways as the wrong way;
Target ND kids;
Aim to assimilate NDs into neuronormative culture;
Tell NDs they have to do this in order to make and keep friends;
Train people to worry more about what others think of them than their own wants and needs;
Teach masking;
Set NDs up to now know what real friendship is and get taken advantage of.

Column 2: WHAT THEY COULD DO:
Validate ND ways of thinking, feeling, playing, and socializing;
Frame ND ways and NT ways as equally valid;
Teach both NTs and NDs about each other;
Present it as an optional way to more safely navigate neuronormative culture;
Tell NDs that true friends will like them for who they are;
Promote self-acceptance and self-advocacy skills;
Teach ABOUT masking and the risks that come with it;
Help NDs spot the difference between real friends and fake friends

Social media reminds me of a big popularity contest, while everyone pretends it isn't, even as they engage in it and perpetuate it. Weird.

I can't unsee it. I am so different this way.

The quiet forest beckons.

Human connection is a basic need for all of us, but so many disabled adults lack access to social engagement and often don't get to leave the house or have friends. Instead, we create a household full of peers that makes its own plans for community involvement.

Finding jobs for people with disabilities is much harder than just job hunting, and we work very hard to locate people who will hire them and make the connections in communities so we can offer this when the state funded resources are not successful.

Having a job is so important for many people with disabilities. It provides structure, gives a sense of purpose, is a reason for social engagement, and allows people to make money to support themselves and be independent.
