The unintended invocation of an archaic anti-Black slur was framed in press accounts as staining an otherwise electric moment but it was kind of perfect really. Jesse was meeting us where we were, in all our ignorant humanness, and giving us our power back. He was forging connection.

Now, you might not expect a mostly-White bunch of autoworkers in a mostly-White factory town in a blindingly-White, pretty fucking racist state to hold a Black guy from Chicago in great esteem, but Jesse Jackson was greeted as a rock star when he showed up at the main plant. Because he saw us.

I'm mostly teasing, and same, but I'm also cognizant of just how much many of us involved in activist scenes have built our identities around it. And the lesson of LA/Chicago/Twin Cities is that mutual aid and solidarity come naturally to a lot of people in crisis situations, not just activist types
