I agree with all of this except for the part where you run cover for him. I would recommend against reassuring them he loves them. You're divorced so he's not your responsibility anymore. If they ask about this directly, a simple "I don't know" works. Kids are smart enough to figure these things out

I know it seems like a raw deal right now, but what he's done is a blessing in disguise. Just be 100% there for your kids while they're still young, and the confusion they'll feel about their father will be easier to bear and will fade over time.

Haven't you said he's in CA? One thing I learned from dealing with my ex is that civil courts mostly operate on the honor system. Raise them how you want and if he doesn't like it, too bad. He's out of state and the court isn't likely to do much of anything unless the kids are unsafe with you.

I've been raising my kids for 14 years with very little interaction with their mother, and they are significantly better off for it. It sucks sometimes and is a lot of work, but they'll be better off with him opting out rather than half-assing being a father.

The old idea that kids are better off with both parents in their lives is bullshit. It's only true if they're involved and willing to put in the work.
