People don’t have any idea how things work, and all the colleagues I’ve spoken to have been super credulous about the marketing claims about the slop generating machines. I feel like someone needs to show up and speak emphatically about how it’s all linear algebra and weighted probabilities!

It’ll be a huge pain, but it’s only one more meeting a month. And I can play up my CS most-of-a-degree as expertise (I don’t work in a computer field but it does give me both insight and credibility when I start yelling that text generators definitely don’t feel bad when they apologize for errors!)

I took one AT class in music school and I still use the things I learned in it! The prof who taught it was a would-be concert pianist, openly bitter about the fact that she had to teach theory as a backup career, and AT was the only class she actually liked giving. It was great!

The proposed goal of the committee is to create an official AI policy for the org, and I think it’s probably important for the hater perspective to be adequately represented

My professional org has just sent out an email asking people to join a proposed AI Committee. I’m probably the world’s second-biggest genAI hater, after @anthonymoser.com, so I’d probably make some enemies and/or get kicked off the committee immediately, but should I volunteer for it?
