it's such an amazing feeling to revisit an open source video game you contributed to like five years ago, back when it was still barely playable, and see it now has tons of features, thousands of involved players and a whole community around it 🥹

exclusives don't make much sense anyway in an era where dedicated consoles are sharing a lot of the same hardware with PCs, instead of entirely bespoke architectures. and the ubiquity of cross-platform game engines makes porting way easier than it used to be.

so pivoting away from exclusive games on dedicated consoles is not the worst idea. microsoft has the xbox ally, and sony will probably release a portable console next year. traditional consoles still have a place but they'll likely become more of an "affordable, optimized PC" over time

tbh, microsoft and sony's traditional consoles are both in a tight spot right now. the runaway success of the nintendo switch 2, steam deck, etc. seem to suggest that hybrid consoles are the future, which does eat into the their market share.

console hardware is sold at a loss, so by itself an xbox console is a better value proposition than a pc, even a hand-built one.

probably at least:
* people already in the xbox ecosystem
* people who don't want to buy and/or set up an expensive PC

in short, find whatever energy is motivating you to improve and channel it. even negative feelings can be used to good ends (but be mindful, because it's easy to burn out this way)

for example, my insecurity around people who were really good at math lead me to intense self-study which eventually lead to me taking college-level classes as a high school sophomore

but if you really want immediate results, having a competitive mindset can also help lol. if you get insecure about someone being better than you, channel that into motivation! it's not healthy in the long term but it can be a powerful spring board into doing something

this is very general advice, but having a beginner's mind and being comfortable with uncertainty can go a long way imo. everything in life is an opportunity to learn and reflect.

yeah a lot of them are clearly burnt out but they choose to externalize their discontent instead of sitting with it (many such cases)
