Map of global land showing gridded data of changes in Fire Weather Season Length, with increases of over 40 days per year in south-western North America, much of South America, eastern and southern Africa, south-eastern Europe and central and eastern Australia. Hardly anywhere has a decreased fire season length.

Southern California now sees longer fire weather seasons, like many other places worldwide

Human-caused climate change means hot, dry, windy conditions happen more often, priming landscapes to burn more easily if ignition occurs

Rapid climate action is needed: comparing heat vs. COVID-19-related mortality Scientific Reports - Rapid climate action is needed: comparing heat vs. COVID-19-related mortality

🌡️🔥Climate change isn't a distant threat—it's a public health crisis now. Our study shows heat-related deaths in many cities could surpass annual COVID-19 deaths in just 5–10 years at 3°C warming. Urgent action is needed!

Now that more countries have submitted national GHG inventories in the latest format, I'm starting to write a bit of code to compile it all.

Initial impressions: these sheets are better organised, but there are still so many quality of life improvements to make...

I compared 22 identical climate-related posts on Threads vs Bluesky over the last 3 months, and the difference is shocking.

Normalized engagement on Threads dropped nearly 2/3 + my following dropped, while Bluesky engagement held steady + following quadrupled.

What’s driving this?

2024 progress, challenges, and what you can do

Each year, I adopt 2 new climate-friendly habits.

Originally, I focused on reducing my carbon footprint.

Then, I looked at how to catalyze change at scale: communicating, engaging with others, supporting climate action groups.

This year, I’m going deeper, focusing on what powers our fight: love.

Vertical cross section (latitude vs. pressure) plot showing zonal mean temperature trends for the Northern Hemisphere in Octobers from 1979 to 2022. The Arctic is warming the fastest. The troposphere is warming in all regions and the stratosphere is cooling overtop all regions.

Warming prominently extends vertically aloft into the lower/mid-troposphere over the Arctic in October (i.e., notable Arctic amplification temperature trends).

September 2023 Temperature Update 🔥

Warmest September & largest anomaly ever measured, shattering previous September record.

Warming since August concentrated in polar regions.

Near certain that 2023 becomes the warmest year.

Likely 2023 exceeds 1.5 °C.
