heads up to anyone who holds trans kids near: amy harmon from the nyt is searching for and having a hard time finding people to interview to find out exactly what trans kids are doing when their care is limited or cut off, and for purposes of community safety, please shut the fuck up around her.

Farage wants to strip a lot of his voter demographic of their payments and ummmm I think that is going to be one hell of a shock.

Doesn’t seem to bother Trump voters. So far Farage isn’t doing anything off the MAGA play book.

Meanwhile, in good news, the Netherlands (having flirted aggressively with the right wing for some time) has just elected a young, hot, gay, socially liberal PM.

The richest man on earth owns X.

The second richest man on earth is about to acquire TikTok and his family could soon own both Paramount and Warner Bros.

The third richest man owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The fourth richest man owns The Washington Post.

See the problem here?

It’s (maybe not so) eerie that this whole argument is so familiar to those used to justify the disaster of Brexit, this side of the Pond.

Not to minimise your situation. Do you have additional contributing conditions? I’ve been sitting behind a computer for 31 years and I’m fine.

I think she did a very brave thing by going on Fox to have that conversation. But the whole thing was doomed from Baier’s first question. She’s defending the intricacies of a law rather than making the case for immigration. There a big difference

Or - maybe, just spit balling here - those same politicians might make an argument for SOMETHING other than ‘hey look, we can be just as mean as the right wing’. Make an argument FOR immigration / liberalism / reducing inequities / taking care of people. Something to vote for, would be nice.

Talking about Mars colonies / settlements for the next 100 years is just nuts. There’s lower hanging fruit available and all within a couple of hours or 3 days travel from the home of human physiology. But sure, let Musk and his cronies just waste as much money on a futile venture.

From there, it’s an easier option to build a Lunar base where humans can at least test further the longer term effects of low g exposure and radiation impacts. Launching from there to Mars also makes more sense than direct from earth.

22.02.2025 23:31 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

The far smarter option is to clean up existing space junk orbiting the earth. Then build a serious settlement in Earth orbit where longer term physiological studies can occur. This would also be where actual spaceships could be built. That would be the jumping off point for more exploration.

22.02.2025 23:28 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

The argument for a colony on Mars is to service longer term mining and mineral exploitation of the asteroids positioned between the inner planets and the outer planets. But there’s been almost no serious exploration of those asteroids that justifies the huge costs and risks of human settlement.

22.02.2025 23:25 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Human physiology would need to be extensively ‘hacked’ at both a genetic and phenotypical level which obviously raises a raft of ethical concerns as you’ve outlined. The kind of work that would have to happen would inevitably result in a dramatic speciation that we are not equipped to consider yet.

22.02.2025 23:22 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

There would be no real option for long term terraforming as Mars lacks a magnetosphere. Any atmo created artificially would escape into space meaning that the settlement would always be underground. Permanent underground living is not conducive to human physiology as it currently stands.

You are 100% correct. Some other considerations: children on the planet would suffer from growth abnormalities even without radiation mutation. Bones and muscles would lack density and connectivity. Even if they did develop semi-normally, those children would never be able to return to earth.
