Gaire and Cliste went hunting and––well, it’s spring. They came home with nothing but a few snails. Meanwhile Ailgen and me ––the pregnant and the lame––gathered hairy bittercress to go with the four snails to flavour tonight's watery broth. But tomorrow…’

As fast as they’d come, the gannets were gone. The sea was smooth again, a shaft of light broke through the cloud. As Darach went on calling, ‘Gan-net! Gan-net!’ Sulaire crouched on the rock, spent and empty, as if her own totem had gone from her to the clan.

‘You have the makings of a craftsman.’ Bhòid heard something taut in Volpo’s silky voice, like a line with a fish on the end of it and Leukos was the fish.

Mine don't have screens:
If you cross the water and travel south, you'll see mountains so high the snow never melts. In their foothills are caves where images of aurochs and bison, drawn on the walls, guide the beasts' spirits to the hunters.’

Yes it's a tough journey for any of us. How to market! When to market! How to leave enough room to write the next book. 'Windswept Desire' starts off at a clipping pace, steamy and sensual.

Definitely no cities.
Sulaire looked across the meeting place. Under the bustle and hum of the Summer Gathering––Hunters returning from the fells; the ring of hammers and adzes; the air thick with the smell of smoking meat––she heard a silence.

Mathan had grown very old––hunched under his bearskin, hair streaked with white, eagle nose gaunt in his weathered face. Beside him, Sagart seemed to grow taller, tall as a pine in the forest––as if her moon power was rising as Mathan’s sun power waned.

Oh dear! No percentages. Do stone-age people count to 100?
The Priestess’s thin voice sliced the air. ‘For a clan, the law says ten hale men and women. I see only nine and a bunch of cripples––the deaf boy, the blind lad, the idiot, and you, the cripple.’

Let Ruad be with the women tonight, Bhòid thought. Let him have a moment of belonging––my blood brother, who had neither father nor mother nor sister when he was small, who has such a loneliness in his heart.

Kate DiCamillo 'The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.' So so confidently, yet simply, written. The fable of the heartless rabbit who learns to love has, like so many of the great 'children's' books, timeless, ageless appeal, accessible to anyone who was ever a child.

So, convert is a loaded word. 🙃 I'm not banging on people's doors spreading the good word lest their semi-literate souls are damned to library hell or anything. But, if someone were receptive to trying a fantasy book, I would recommend recommend Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett. 🧵

The young man tossed his head, ‘One day we’ll make a clan of our own.’
Fiada raised an eyebrow. ‘All four of you? Parsa only a child, and deaf? You need ten strong adults to be recognised as a clan, as many as the fingers on two hands.’

‘The Goddess sees beyond ceremonies,’ Oran said. ‘You are a true healer. You listen with your heart.’

Day 30: Mountain hares. When I realised that hares, like rabbits were introduced by the Romans, so my Mesolithic characters didn't have them. Also polio (seen in Egyptian art); and realising that you can't sharpen flint with a stone, but you must knapp it with a bone.

“A the dawn of time, there were Twins, the boy Speir, and the girl Seren. Seren knew every blade of grass by the stream, and every flower on the heath, and every leaf in the forest. And Speir was the best hunter in the world, except for Ullr, the God of the Hunt.”

Bhòid stood at the head of the cairn looking out over the sea. The stones placed over her were so cold, so hard, the wind piercing through them.
'We were together,' his heart cried, 'from before our mother’s womb, like Seren and Speir, the Sky Twins, from the dawn of time.

I'd say The Secret Garden, but others will think of that. How about Mary Grant Bruce's Billabong books with a great sense of rural Australia in early C20, great books of their time.
