in my mind the substantive differentiator between a tool like stem separation and other ai applications isn't as clean as "is generation happening or not?" i agree that it's important to have these conversations and find the dividing line between "acceptable" and "unacceptable" ai tools,

i'm not just being persnickety about semantics. when it's used under the blanket "AI" term in marketing, i think they're disingenuously hoping everybody thinks they're talking about the flashy new full-generation stuff that everyone's desperate to sell. it's a whitewashing technique

idk, stem-splitting has been around for a while, and even if it's gotten a lot better with ml/ai techniques, i think it's functionally/practically different enough from image or video generation that they shouldn't be grouped together. closer to using ml for subject detection/separation in photoshop
