text from a post on LinkedIn: My ask to the journalists who are posting solidarity or "sad for my friends/colleagues" posts. Please stop! Be strategic: your post clogs up the feed at a moment when your laid off friends NEED the airtime. Instead of that you can RT their post with comment, pay to boost the posts of your colleagues, signal boost by commenting (give them a recommendation). That is way more helpful than virtue signalling. Exception: Hiring managers and recruiters with actual hiring power, you post those jobs and your emails!

LinkedIn brain is a menace. Acts of empathy don't need to be "strategic." Let people be human. Let people share in a collective despair. Let people feel like they are not alone. People can be helpful and express sympathy/empathy. We shouldn't have to choose just so your feed isn't "clogged."

I think Rayne Fisher-Quann has made a great point about how mental illness inevitably makes us worse people in many ways. But then that can get misinterpreted as an excuse for us not be held accountable for our actions because nuance is a foreign concept to so many people online.

I haven't dealt with full-blown manic episodes or psychosis, so I can't really speak from experience there. I don't like Kanye as a person or political figure, but the notion that compassion for the mentally ill is reserved just for the people we like or agree with also doesn't sit right with me.
