one thing that stood out to me reading the book was just how much of a huge judgy bitch Lomelli/Lawrence is. He has an opinion about every single person at the conclave and does not hold back. I love him.

I've been very lucky in a lot of ways, to be clear, and I still cannot imagine the lives some of these people are living. The disconnect is vast.

the number of times I've googled a successful author and found out they come from ridiculous wealth is way too high. even anecdotally, I've met so many writers with upper class backgrounds, trust funds, expensive elite degrees, high-earning spouses, no day jobs... it can be enraging.

Say it after me: Chat GPT is not a search engine. It does not scan the web for information, it just generates statistically likely sentences. You cannot use it a search engine, or as a substitute for searching.

Now. Please never use an LLM for information searches ever again.

addendum: my advice will probably stop being relevant in a few years. I would not take querying advice from anyone who's been out of the trenches for 5+ years, because the landscape has changed dramatically. I would also not take advice from anyone who got signed really really fast on book #1.

I know what it’s like to be so exhausted and desperate to get published that you think you'd be happy with ANY agent, but there's a reason we're always saying “no agent is better than a bad agent!” Please, please do your due diligence—with which, again, I'm happy to help!

I queried for 8 years, I’ve signed with two agencies, been on sub twice, on both ends of mentoring programs, and now have a trad deal. I've Seen Some Shit, and believe in transparency for new writers. I'm happy to check PM for those who can’t afford it, point out red flags, and answer questions.

I don't have much following here but I'll say it anyway: There are a lot of bad actors in pub calling themselves "agents", and I see writers falling prey every day.
